Two-time Tony nominee Charlotte d'Amboise has joined the cast of the New York revival of Jay Presson Allen's Tru that will be presented to an audience of only 99 theatregoers nightly.

As previously reported, Tony winner and five-time Emmy nominee Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Take Me Out, Modern Family) will play late writer Truman Capote in the production, which will be presented March 6-April 12 in the Library of the House of the Redeemer, an Upper East Side mansion first owned by a great-granddaughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt. Opening night is set for March 19.

Directed by Tony winner Rob Ashford (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Frozen), d'Amboise will be an onstage presence, although additional details have yet to be revealed. Like the original Broadway staging, this production will also feature some pre-recorded voices.

Tru—about the literary pioneer best known for In Cold Blood and Breakfast at Tiffany’s—debuted on Broadway in December 1989 at the Booth Theatre. Directed by the author, Robert Morse appeared in the title role and won the 1990 Tony for Best Actor in a Play.

The play, drawn entirely from Capote's own words, is set in December 1975 as the writer is alone in his New York apartment, reeling from a crisis that cost him the elite social circle he adored.

In an earlier statement Ferguson said, "I have long been fascinated by Truman Capote—both the man and his writing—and it is the honor of my career to be entrusted with playing him in the first New York revival of Tru. From the moment Rob Ashford and I first discussed the idea, I envisioned an intimate, environmental experience. I can't wait for audiences to encounter this play up close in the uniquely intimate, historic House of the Redeemer."

Ashford added, “I had the great pleasure of directing Jesse in a staged reading of Tru as a one-night-only charity benefit in Tangier, Morocco, the summer of 2024. He was mesmerizing! He captured the truth of the man, his humor, and heartbreak. I’m thrilled that we get the opportunity to further explore this great pairing of actor and character."

The upcoming production will also have scenic decor and properties by Mike Harrison, lighting design by Emily Schmit, sound design by Christopher Darbassie, dialect coaching by Kate Wilson, associate direction by Stephen Sposito, and production stage management by Eloia Peterson.

Hudson Theatrical Associates serves as production supervisor with Jonathan Whitton and Christophe Desorbay of Seaview as general manager.

Ferguson won the 2022 Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his performance in the revival of Take Me Out. His other Broadway credits include On the Town, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and Fully Committed, winning a Drama Desk Award for his work in the latter. He has appeared in seven productions for the Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park, including the recent Twelfth Night. Ferguson played Mitchell Pritchett on ABC’s Modern Family for 11 seasons, earning five Emmy nominations. His film credits include Cocaine Bear and A Very Jonas Christmas Movie and currently hosts the podcast Dinner’s On Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

D'Amboise, who made her Broadway debut in Cats, has been nominated for two Tony Awards: for her performance as Cassie in the Broadway revival of A Chorus Line and multiple roles in Jerome Robbins' Broadway. She has also won Fred Astaire Awards for her work in Pippin, Sweet Charity, and Damn Yankees, and is a frequent presence in the record-breaking revival of Chicago, which has earned her the LA Ovation Award, the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, and the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Award. She has also appeared in the Broadway casts of Company, Contact, Carrie, and Song and Dance. Her TV and film credits include The In Crowd, American Blue Note, Just Off the CoastThe Preacher's Wife, Every Little Step, Frances Ha, Law & Order, and One Life to Live.

Tru is produced by Seaview, OHenry Productions, and Mickey Liddell and Pete Shilaimon in association with A Kid Named Beckett Productions.
