News All-Asian Cast Brings to Life Clifford Odets' Awake and Sing! Tonight Off-Broadway The Public Theater presents The National Asian American Theatre Company's production of Awake and Sing!, one of playwright Clifford Odet's most acclaimed works. Set in the Bronx during the Depression era, the play about a Jewish family is performed by an all-Asian cast.

The show, which begins July 6, will officially open July 13 for a run through Aug. 1.

Stephen Brown-Fried directs a cast that includes Mia Katigbak recreating her OBIE Award-winning role as the matriarch Bessie along with Sanjit De Silva, Mel Duane Gionson, Teresa Avia Lim, James Saito, Jon Norman Schneider, David Shih, Alok Tewari and Henry Yuk.

Awake and Sing!  premiered on Broadway in 1935. It follows the story of the Bergers, a lower middle-class Jewish family living in a Bronx apartment during the Depression, highlighting the essential experiences of the immigrant in American history and ongoing today.

"NAATCO is a company that has pursued its beautiful mission with integrity, passion, and extraordinary talent," said the Public's artistic director Oskar Eustis in a press statement. "The Public is proud to host their luminous production of Awake and Sing!"

"Being at The Public to celebrate NAATCO’s 25th anniversary is such an important way to kick off our celebrations," said Katigbak, also the company's artistic producing director in a press statement. "We are very thankful to Oskar for his generosity and for his support of Asian American representation on the American stage."
