Anthony appears in the current season of the A&E drama "Unforgettable" as well as on the Starz original drama series "Power." Her film credits include the Spike Lee film "Chi-Raq."
Anthony released a statement saying, "I am so thrilled to be joining a production filled with such powerful, talented women. Eclipsed is a stunning new play that demands to be seen, and to make my Broadway debut as a producer with it is an honor!"
Anthony added: "I'm especially excited to join the production’s efforts to bring thousands of young women to see the show through its 10,000 Girls campaign. What an extraordinary opportunity to pave the way for the next generation of commanding young women."
Nyong'o, who originated the role Off-Broadway, will once again be joined onstage by Pascale Armand, Akosua Busia, Zainab Jah and Saycon Sengbloh. Danai Gurira's play, about a group of women being held captive in the African nation of Liberia, is helmed by Liesl Tommy and stars the "12 Years a Slave" actress.
Producers had previously noted that "Eclipsed marks a historic moment on Broadway: the first time the cast, director, and playwright are composed entirely of female artists, fitting for a production that so stunningly chronicles the experiences of a group of very resilient women." Now the show adds a female producer. The Broadway engagement is set to begin performances at the Golden Theatre Feb. 23 with an official opening scheduled for March 6. Tickets can be purchased via Telecharge.com or by calling (212) 239-6200.
The Off-Broadway production was extended twice and closed Nov. 29, 2015.
Lupita Nyong'o on Her Bold NY Stage Debut, Ellen's Famous Oscar Selfie and Rediscovering "Normalcy."
The "vitally important" play is a story of survival and resilience set in post-colonial Africa. Here's how the show is billed: "Amid the chaos of the Liberian Civil War, the captive wives of a rebel officer band together to form a fragile community – until the balance of their lives is upset by the arrival of a new girl. Drawing on reserves of wit and compassion, Eclipsed reveals distinct women who must discover their own means of survival in this deeply felt portrait of women finding and testing their own strength in a hostile world of horrors not of their own making."
Additional producers include Stephen Byrd, Alia Jones-Harvey, Paula Marie Black, Carole Shorenstein Hays, Kenny Ozoude, Willette Klausner, Michael Magers and The Public Theater.
