Clare Barron's Obie-winning You Got Older will return Off-Broadway this winter, playing February 12-March 29, 2026, at the newly reopened Cherry Lane Theatre. Opening night is set for February 23.
The new production will be directed by Tony nominee and Obie winner Anne Kauffman, who also directed the play’s premiere. Alia Shawkat (Search Party, Blink Twice, Arrested Development) will star with additional casting to be announced.
Shawkat, who will be making her theatrical debut, will next appear in NEON's The Wrong Girls, alongside Kristen Stewart and Seth Rogen. She was recently seen in Atropia, winner of the Sundance Grand Jury Prize.
The play follows Mae (Shawkat), who returns to her Washington hometown to take care of her ailing father after losing her job and her boyfriend. When she unexpectedly meets a mysterious stranger, she has the startling realization that maybe the intimacy she’s been craving is easier with the unknown, rather than with her own family.
“The chance to revisit this play with Anne Kauffman is a dream come true,” said playwright Barron in a statement. “We both got older. Who knows if we're wiser! But it's a beautiful experience to see the play through a new lens with a new venture on a precious, old stage. Life and intimacy continue to confound.”
The upcoming production will also have scenic design by Tony nominee Arnulfo Maldonado (Buena Vista Social Club), costume design by Obie winner Ásta Bennie Hostetter (John), lighting design by Tony nominee Isabella Byrd (Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club), and sound design and composition by Tony nominee Daniel Kluger (Oh, Mary!). Taylor Williams is the casting director.
You Got Older received its world premiere in 2014 at HERE Arts Center, presented by Page 73, under the direction of Kauffman.
