A musicalized reading of Alexandra Silber’s novel After Anatevka, the new pop musical Proud Marys, Florencia Iriondo's Song Society, and more will be presented through Prospect Musical's Ignite Concert Festival, running March 5-30 at New York City's Baruch Performing Arts Center.
A launch event will kick off the series March 5, offering open-mic style performances and the opportunity for Prospect members and festival passholders to meet artists.
Silber’s musical After Anatevka will be presented March 7. Performed by Silber with music direction from Ben Moss, the work explors what happens to the remarkable characters of Fiddler on the Roof after the curtain falls. Silber starred as Tzeitel in the 2015 Broadway revival of the Bock and Harnick musical, adapted from stories by Sholem Aleichem.
Iriondo's indie solo musical Song Society will be presented in concert March 12. Blending original folk-pop music with intimate storytelling, Iriondo invites the audience into an analogue world where an eccentric machine may or may not literally erase what has completed its run. Song Society will feature a book, music, and lyrics from Iriondo, direction by Jason Aguirre, dramaturgy by Adam Mathias, guitar and arrangements by Federico Díaz, and cello and guitar by Agustín Uriburu.
Composed and performed by Jaime Lozano, New Musicals from Jaime Lozano – In Concert will be performed March 16. The Mexican-born, multi-hyphenate musical theatre artist and storyteller will perform songs from some of his anticipated new musicals such as Roja, Frida, Desaparecidas, Present Perfect, and others. Special guest artists will soon be announced.
Sophie Blanchard’s High-Flyin’ Rock’n’Roll Extravaganza – In Concert will be presented March 27. With music, words, and orchestrations by Lizzie Hagstedt and direction by Céline Rosenthal, the musical explores the dazzling life (and fiery end) of the world’s first professional female aeronaut.
Running March 29-30, new pop musical Proud Marys will be presented in concert in partnership with the National Asian Artists Project, as part of NAAP’s Discover Series and in association with community partner Broadway Barkada. In it, three daughters shake up the strict traditions of their Filipino-American family when they all get pregnant out of wedlock at the same time. The musical features a book, story and lyrics by Jennifer Paz, music and lyrics by Anthony Fedorov, and direction and dramaturgy by Fran de Leon.
