Tony winner Alan Cumming directs the Off-Broadway debut of Jacob Storms' new solo play Tennessee Rising: The Dawn of Tennessee Williams, officially opening March 5 after beginning performances February 19 at AMT Theatre. The run will continue through April 2.
The work explores a formative period in the Streecar Named Desire writer's life, covering 1939 to 1945 as unknown writer Tom Williams transforms himself into the world-renowned Southern Gothic playwright.
An earlier version of the play won the United Solo Award at the 2017 United Solo Festival, headlining the Tennessee Williams Festival St. Louis the following year. The current iteration was slated to premiere in March 2020 at New Orleans' Beaubourg Theatre before being canceled due to COVID-19.
Storms is best known for his work on Amazon's Read Oaks. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Guggenheim, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Symphony Space. Cumming is a Tony winner for his iconic performance as the Emcee in Cabaret. Primarily a performer, Cumming co-directed (with Jennifer Jason Leigh) and starred in the 2001 film The Anniversary Party.
