London News Amrou Al-Kadhi to Direct Sam Morrison's Sugar Daddy Off-West End

Al-Kadhi is the author of Life as a Unicorn, which received both the Polari First Book Prize and a Somerset Maugham Award.

British-Iraqi writer and director Amrou Al-Kadhi will direct a newly reimagined staging of Sam Morrison’s Sugar Daddy in LondonAl-Kadhi succeeds previous director Stephen Brackett.

Set to run for five weeks Off-West End this spring, this production of Morrison's acclaimed solo show is produced by Edgewood Entertainment, with co-production by Alan Cumming and Billy Porter. The run will play Underbelly Boulevard Soho, performing March 5-April 4 and officially opening March 10.

Written and performed by Morrison, the work sees the artist grappling with the death of his partner from COVID-19, and transforming his grief into humor on a journey of love, loss, diabetes, seagull attacks, and a few extraordinary coincidences. The work premiered at Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2022, and played a multi-extended run at Off-Broadway's SoHo Playhouse in 2023.

Raised between the Gulf and London, Al-Kadhi is the author of the award-winning memoir Life as a Unicorn, which received both the Polari First Book Prize and a Somerset Maugham Award. In theatre, they have headlined Soho Theatre and toured internationally with solo shows including From Qur’an to Queen and Drag Mother, performed under the name Glamrou.

Said Al-Kadhi, “I am so excited to be directing Sam and this gorgeous piece of work—equal parts hilarious, heartbreaking, original, and surprising, this show intersects fascinating themes of faith, grief, sexuality, and downright absurdity in ways that are going to enlighten audiences.
