The nominations for the 33rd Annual Joseph Jefferson Awards for Equity and non-resident productions in Chicago were announced Sept. 13.
Winners of Chicago's highest theatre honors will be announced in a ceremony Nov. 5 at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, IL. High profile nominees include Bronson Pinchot (Fully Committed), Kathleen Turner (for the scuttled tour of Tallulah), actress Martha Plimpton (Hedda Gabler), actor Frank Galati (The Drawer Boy), director Tiny Landau (The Ballad of Little Jo), actor Norbert Leo Butz and composer-lyricist Jason Robert Brown (for the musical, The Last Five Years).
Nominations for Outstanding Production of a Play include And Neither Have I Wings to Fly from producers Michael Leavitt, Fox Theatricals and John York Noble; Hard Times, produced by the Lookingglass Theatre Company in association with The Actors Gymnasium; Court Theatre's The Invention of Love; and Chicago Shakespeare Theater's King Lear, The School for Scandal and The Two Gentlemen of Verona.
Resident musical productions nominated include The Ballad of Little Jo from Steppenwolf Theatre Company; Drury Lane Oakbrook's production of big, the musical; and Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire's productions of Evita, The King and I and Mame.
The Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire had the most noms, with 23, representing five shows. Steppenwolf Theatre Company and Northlight Theatre both earned 15 nominations. Lookingglass Theatre Company was nominated for 11 Jeffs (eight in association with The Actors Gymnasium), and Chicago Shakespeare Theater earned 10 noms for three productions.

The Nov. 5 evening is black tie optional, and the public is invited to attend. Nominations represent shows that played Aug. 1, 2000 and July 31, 2001. The 45-member Jeff Committee judged 116 Equity productions offered by 49 producing organizations and nine non-resident productions. The committee recommended a total of 72 productions presented by 34 producing organizations. The final roster of 122 Jeff nominations in 25 categories represents productions from 26 producing organizations. The 11 Non Resident nominations in three categories represent eight productions offered by eight producing organizations.
Originally chartered to recognize Equity productions, the Citations Non-Equity wing was founded in 1973 to celebrate outstanding achievement in non-union Chicago theatre (the awards are presented in June). Non-Resident award categories were established in 1992 in recognition of the contributions to Chicago theatre by non-local producing organizations — usually touring shows. The committee, composed of theatre professionals and enthusiasts, evaluates approximately 200 theatrical productions and holds two awards ceremonies each year.
