The new musical The Royal Family of Broadway is set to have its world premiere at Barrington Stage Company in the Berkshires this summer. The show marks a reunion between William Finn (music and lyrics) and his 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee collaborator Rachel Sheinkin (book).
Based on George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber's play The Royal Family, the new musical is set in the 1920s and concerns the Cavendishes, who are loosely based on the legendary Barrymore family. The Royal Family of Broadway centers on three generations of actors: a grande dame, a lovelorn Broadway star, a boozing and Hollywood-bound leading man, and a promising ingénue.
