DESCRIPTION

Casting "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao," by Junot Díaz.

Literature to Life (LTL) is a performance-based literacy program that presents professionally staged verbatim adaptations of American literary classics. LTL’s mission is to perform great books that inspire young people to read and become authors of their own lives. This mighty collective of artists and educators brings the voices of diverse authors to thousands of students and audiences nationwide, giving them the tools to become the empowered “voices worth hearing” of our future. Performance venues range from large presenting houses and conventional theaters to classrooms, libraries, community centers, correctional facilities, and everything in between. The student audience is core to Literature to Life’s educational mission, and the actor is an important role model.

Seeking a NY-based actor (Male, Dominican American, 20s-30s), comfortable with solo performance and inhabiting multiple characters in a one-person adaptation of 'The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.' The actor will play the central narrator Yunior, a womanizing jock full of bravado, as he recounts the life of his friend, Oscar “Wao” de León—a nerdy, overweight Dominican-American obsessed with books, sci-fi, and finding love. From New Jersey to Santo Domingo, we follow their friendship as Oscar battles loneliness, self-acceptance, and the inherited “fukú” curse that shadows his family. Haunted by the memory of his late friend, Yunior tells the story with humor, grit, and heartbreaking beauty, revealing the contradictions of Dominican identity, masculinity, and culture. The actor also plays Oscar, Lola, their mom Belicia, their abuela La Inca, Ybon, and El Capitan, among other characters ranging from 20s to 70s years of age. Versatility and depth of character exploration is a must.

Rehearses (two 8-week rehearsal periods) between May to October (with a break in July); runs (selected scenes and full show previews) September in NYC with a premiere performance early October (and thereafter ongoing local and national bookings) in the US.

For consideration, send a headshot and resume with “Wao Casting Submission” in the subject line. Submission deadline Apr. 10. You will be contacted if you are required to submit a pre-screen video. Callbacks will take place the week of Apr. 20-27.
