Young Audiences New York (YANY) is actively seeking practicing artists with experience working with young people (PreK-12) for in-person, part-time contractual teaching positions in partnership with public schools and community-based organizations. We are specifically looking for artists who specialize in brass instruments and are available to teach after-school on Wednesdays and Thursdays at PS 205X (2475 Southern Boulevard, Bronx, NY 10458). The after-school program runs from approximately 2:30-5pm starting in late February through June 2025. Additional opportunities for work may arise in other schools or sites around NYC.
YANY’s Teaching Artists (TAs) provide exceptional arts education instruction to students by designing and facilitating multi-session arts residencies working in partnership with classroom teachers and school administrators to customize arts education curricula to meet the needs of the diverse student populations we serve. TAs demonstrate equal mastery in their art form and in educational practice by designing developmentally appropriate arts residencies that cultivate students into lifelong learners and appreciators of art. Teaching Artists report to YANY’s program staff.
Role and Responsibilities
Design and lead engaging, developmentally appropriate, and culturally responsive arts residencies for young people
Attend planning meetings with partner sites and draft customized curriculum for each residency
Work in partnership with teachers and administrators to plan culminating events
Sustain regular, thorough, timely, and professional communications with YANY staff
Submit curriculum, photos, reflections, and any other required documents in a timely fashion
Generate and submit supply orders for residencies within program budgets
Enter biweekly timesheets
Attend meetings, trainings, professional development workshops, and other program events as requested by program staff
Competencies/Skills
Enjoys working with school-aged youth and is passionate about their artistic development
Brings creativity, flexibility, and joy to collaboration with students, partners, and YANY staff
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact authentically with diverse populations
Experience designing innovative lesson plans that align curricula with educational standards (including NYC Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts)
Demonstrates a commitment to being a reflective practitioner
Ability to stage performances or mount exhibitions within 12 sessions
Experience meeting programming and administrative deadlines
Effective time management and organizational skills
Understands classroom management as successful student engagement and has experience implementing effective strategies, experience with Social-Emotional Learning practices a plus
Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree or proven experience working in PreK-12 settings
Demonstrated expertise in an instrumental music discipline through educational and/or professional accomplishments and maintains an active artistic practice
At least 2 years’ experience teaching music to young people
Available to work at PS 205X’s after-school program on Wednesdays and Thursdays in spring 2025
DOE fingerprinting and background clearance (pre-employment)
Ability to instruct in languages other than English a plus (specifically Spanish, French, Arabic, and Mandarin)
Teaching Artist Pay: Starting instructional rate of $75/hour.
