This summer (June–August 2025), Bard SummerScape returns with a vibrant season of dance, theater, opera, music, and the beloved Spiegeltent. Presented by the Fisher Center at Bard, this celebrated multi-arts festival takes place in person on Bard’s idyllic 1,000-acre campus, featuring performances in the stunning Frank Gehry-designed performing arts center.

The Wardrobe Supervisor is part of the Wardrobe team in the Production Department and supports the execution of costuming elements and needs for the SummerScape Opera and Dance productions. They report to the Costume Supervisor and supervise the wardrobe run crew, in addition to working closely with other production team members and costume designers.

This is a seasonal position from June 3 through August 21, non-exempt (overtime eligible), paid hourly at a rate range of $28-32/hr depending on experience. Hours will average 35–40 hours/week, with potential for overtime.

Local residence is required during the dates listed above; campus housing will be provided free of charge if needed, including a single bedroom and shared amenities based on availability. Employees will have access to three (3) meals per weekday and two (2) meals per weekend day on campus during the residency period. Should campus dining agreements or options change from the time of the agreement, an equivalent per diem will be provided. PLEASE NOTE: Room and board may differ for current Bard College students.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Job Responsibilities:

Maintain a safe, healthy, and inclusive workplace at all times

Supervise the wardrobe run crew

Coordinate the care, management, and organization of finished costumes with dressers and costume shops

Create wardrobe paperwork, including, but not limited to, costume change and dresser plots

Supervise the preparation of dressing lists and costume check-in sheets

Attend studio rehearsals and run-throughs as necessary

Attend and work all opera technical rehearsals and performances

Supervise any alterations necessary during the dress rehearsal period

Supervise the costume strike, including, but not limited to, laundry, dry cleaning, and rental

returns

Performs other duties as assigned by the Costume Supervisor

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE

Experience supervising a wardrobe run crew

Experience creating paperwork, including piece lists, run sheets, care instructions, etc.

Demonstrated experience in costume construction and maintenance

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Strong knowledge of costume construction and maintenance

Basic knowledge of costume and fashion history

Knowledge of and experience in basic laundry and fabric cleaning techniques and supplies

Demonstrated managerial skills

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Good organizational skills

Ability to sit and stand for long periods

Ability to remain calm during high-pressure, quick change situations

Ability to move and lift objects up to 50 lbs.

Ability to climb stairs

Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays, as set by production schedule

Ability to maintain professionalism and decorum while assisting performers in quick changes

Successful candidates possess strong communication skills and keen attention to detail, are collaborative and self-motivated, and bring a positive, can-do attitude

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with supervising an opera or similar show with a large number of performers

Experience prepping a production, especially necessary paperwork, for a tour

Experience working in a performing arts center environment with multiple overlapping projects competing for resources

WORKING CONDITIONS

Lifting, pushing, and packing materials up to 30 lbs.

Extended periods of standing and sitting

Frequently works in dimly lit spaces, assisting with quick changes

May handle dyes, natural and synthetic fibers, and materials including but not limited to feathers, furs, leather, and more
