This summer (June–August 2025), Bard SummerScape returns with a vibrant season of dance, theater, opera, music, and the beloved Spiegeltent. Presented by the Fisher Center at Bard, this celebrated multi-arts festival takes place in person on Bard’s idyllic 1,000-acre campus, featuring performances in the stunning Frank Gehry-designed performing arts center.
The Light Board Programmer is a part of the Lighting/Electrics team in the Production Department and works with the show’s Lighting Designer to create the lighting vision. They report to the Head Electrician and work closely with other production team members and lighting designers.
This is a seasonal position from June 14 through 26 and July 10 through 25, non-exempt (overtime eligible), paid hourly at a rate range of $30-40/hr depending on experience. Hours will average 35-40 hours/week, with the potential for overtime. Additional work may be available and can be discussed during the interview process.
Local residence is required during the dates listed above; campus housing will be provided free of charge if needed, including a single bedroom and shared amenities based on availability. Employees will have access to three (3) meals per weekday and two (2) meals per weekend day on campus during the residency period. Should campus dining agreements or options change from the time of the agreement, an equivalent per diem will be provided. PLEASE NOTE: Room and board may differ for current Bard College students.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Job Responsibilities:
Maintain a safe, healthy, and inclusive workplace at all times
Be present at all work, focus, tech, and rehearsal calls
Be the sole person responsible for the operation of the lighting console
Create and maintain ways that speed up programing as much as possible
Work with the Lighting Designer to get all of their board notes completed in a timely manner
Assist in troubleshooting any data/light board issues that might arise during the run of tech
Communicate any issues discovered to the Head Electrician to allow for timely resolution

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
EXPERIENCE
Knowledge and experience working with theatrical lighting equipment and systems, including, but not limited to, conventional and automated fixtures, dimming systems, lighting consoles, and atmospheric effects
Knowledge of both general theatrical production processes as well as lighting-specific practices
Ability to read and understand lighting plots and paperwork
Knowledge of theatrical safety practices
Ability to climb stairs and ladders
Ability to move and lift objects up to 50 lbs.
Ability to frequently walk and stand
Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays, as set by production schedule
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working as a Programmer for a variety of different performance genres, including Live theater, opera, and dance
Experience with ETC consoles, particularly ION and GIO.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Regularly exposed to electrical connections
Regularly works in dimly lit areas
Regularly works in areas with atmospheric effects, including but not limited to haze and strobes
Requires some long working hours during the show tech process since often the evenings are devoted to Cuing sessions
