Description:

The Hair and Makeup Assistant works in collaboration with the Shop Supervisor and Associate Shop Supervisor in providing the hair and makeup requirements of the Juilliard School production season, as well as providing supervision of the Juilliard School Hair and Makeup Shop. This includes assisting the Shop Supervisor and Associate Shop Supervisor in facilitating the work of 2 apprentices and mentoring them on every step of the design process. The ideal candidate demonstrates advanced knowledge and skill in wig making, theatrical makeup artistry, strong organizational and collaborative skills, and the ability to deal diplomatically with a wide variety of people.

This is a non-exempt position with a salary range of $51,000 - $52,500 for a 40-week contract.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Apprentices on their individual assignments, inclusive of daily reviews of individual schedules, show build timelines, purchasing, fitting schedules, rental procurements, returns, shopping and general workflow integration with the shop.
  • Takes part in the recruiting and orientation of Hair and Makeup apprentices and overhire.
  • Assists the Shop Supervisor in estimating, monitoring, and maintaining the Hair and Makeup Shop and Show budgets.
  • Actively ensures the effective utilization of resources.
  • Attend production/design meetings as needed.
  • Work directly with the Shop Supervisor and production management to establish production needs and design priorities.
  • Keep expenditures within predetermined time, labor, and budget constraints.
  • Attend tech/dress rehearsals as needed in support of the designer, student performers, and crew.
  • As assigned, supervise dress rehearsal preshow hair and makeup applications and quick changes.
  • Assist with wig and facial hair builds when necessary and as time allows.
  • Manage and track shop inventory as well as participate in shopping duties for hair and makeup materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Actively takes part in forming a mutually collaborative and supportive team with the Shop Supervisor and Associate Shop Supervisor.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ability to work well collaboratively as part of and in a team setting.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times in a fast paced, high intensity environment.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in theatrical hair and makeup.
  • Experience working with all varieties of skin types and skin tones.
  • Experience and commitment to working with a diverse student body in terms of gender expression, race, sexual orientation.
  • Demonstrates leadership, supervision, budget, and project management experience.
  • Excellent organizational and time/material estimation skills.
  • Knowledge of the highest industry standards in makeup, hair safety and sanitation.
  • Experience in teaching wig making.
  • Experience teaching makeup looks to staff and crew.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (staff, students, faculty, and administrators) with diplomacy and tact.
  • Understanding of the mission of The Juilliard School as well as the school’s commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging

Preferred Background:

  • Experience working in an educational institution.
  • Hair and Makeup certification and licensing.
