Director of Sound + A/V
About the Position:

The Director of Sound is responsible for overseeing all sound-related aspects of theater productions, ensuring high-quality audio experiences for both performers and audiences. This role involves managing the sound design process, supervising sound technicians, interns, and volunteers, coordinating with directors and other production staff, and maintaining audio equipment. Additionally, the Director of Sound will have responsibilities related to video and camera systems, including show feed distribution.

Key Responsibilities:

Sound Design + Implementation:
Collaborate with directors, designers, and production teams to develop and implement sound designs that enhance the overall production.
Create and manage sound plots, cue sheets, and other documentation required for sound operation.
Program and operate sound consoles and related equipment during rehearsals and performances.
Guide + train student leaders for the implementation of Education programs in the Educational Theater
Help recruit professional Sound Designers from around the country throughout the season, providing leadership and support to each.
Team Supervision, Volunteer Coordination + Intern Mentorship:
Lead and supervise a team of sound technicians, engineers, interns, and volunteers within the sound department - all with varied experience and abilities.
Train, mentor, and provide guidance to interns, volunteers, and less experienced team members, ensuring they understand their roles and responsibilities.
Develop and implement educational opportunities for volunteers, student, and interns, including hands-on training, workshops, and feedback sessions to foster their professional growth in sound design and technical theater.
Assign tasks and responsibilities, and provide clear instructions to ensure all team members, including interns and volunteers, contribute effectively to the production.
Foster a collaborative and supportive working environment, encouraging skill development, creativity, and positive engagement among all team members.
Work to encourage passionate volunteer participation in the Sound Department through positive relationships, and by providing opportunities for personal accountability and ownership amongst students and volunteers.
Equipment Management:
Maintain and manage all sound equipment, including sound consoles, microphones, speakers, playback devices, and cabling.
Conduct regular checks, maintenance, and repairs of sound equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.
Manage inventory and coordinate the rental or purchase of additional equipment as needed.
Video + Camera Systems Management:
Oversee the setup, operation, and maintenance of video and camera systems used in theater productions.
Coordinate with video designers and technicians to integrate video elements with live sound and stage action.
Manage video feed distribution, ensuring that live feeds are correctly routed to screens, projectors, and other display devices as required.
Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to video and camera systems during rehearsals and performances.
Ensure that video and audio synchronization meets the artistic and technical requirements of the production.
Production Coordination:
Attend production meetings, technical rehearsals, and specified performances to ensure sound and video designs are executed as planned.
Collaborate with other departments, such as lighting, staging, and props, to ensure seamless integration of sound and video with other technical elements.
Adjust sound levels, video feeds, cues, and effects during rehearsals and performances as required.
Budget + Scheduling:
Manage the sound and video department budgets, including cost estimation, tracking expenses, and optimizing resources.
Develop and maintain sound and video schedules in coordination with the overall production timeline, ensuring all requirements are met on time.
Health + Safety:
Ensure all sound and video operations comply with health and safety regulations.
Implement best practices for hearing protection, video safety, and equipment management for performers, crew, and audience members.
Long-Term + Strategic Planning:
Participate in the theater+rsquo;s strategic planning initiatives, contributing to long-term goals related to sound, video technology, and overall production quality.
Evaluate and recommend upgrades, acquisitions, and innovations in sound and video equipment and technologies to keep the theater at the forefront of technical excellence.
Collaborate with leadership and other department heads to align sound and video department goals with the theater+rsquo;s mission, vision, and long-term objectives.
Develop and implement plans for expanding the sound and video department+rsquo;s capabilities, including training programs, resource management, and new production techniques.
Monitor industry trends and emerging technologies to ensure the theater remains competitive and innovative in sound and video production.

Qualifications:

Proven experience as a Director of Sound or similar Sound role within theater production.
Proficiency with sound equipment, including digital and analog sound consoles, playback software, and audio editing tools.
Strong understanding of acoustics, audio signal flow, and sound reinforcement techniques.
Experience with video and camera systems, including setup, operation, and maintenance.
Knowledge of video feed distribution and synchronization with live sound and stage action.
Skills in Logic Pro, QLab, QSC Q-sys, Dante networking, Wavetool, Shure Wireless Workbench, Vectorworks, Clear-com Arcadia/Helixnet, Smaart DI, Yamaha Consoles, Meyer Galaxy processors, ListenEverywhere, Unity intercom, and NDI video.
Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Experience in training, supervising, and working with volunteers and interns, including teaching and mentoring roles.
Experience with long-term planning, budgeting, and strategic development within a theater or live production environment.
Ability to work under pressure and adapt to the dynamic needs of live theater.
Relevant qualifications or certifications in sound design, audio engineering, video technology, or a related field are preferred.

Working Conditions:

Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on production schedules.
Ability to lift and move sound and video equipment as required.
Willingness to work in varied environments, including theaters, rehearsal spaces, and outdoor venues.
Compensation:

FLSA Classification: Full-Time, exempt

Starting at $55,000, but commensurate with Experience.
