DESCRIPTION
Theatre Aspen, the award-winning professional theatre company located in the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado, seeks a Co-Director of Education to help lead and expand its year-round arts education programs. For more than forty years, Theatre Aspen has been a vital cultural institution in the region, producing professional theatre and providing high-quality arts education opportunities for students and families throughout the community.
Working in partnership with the fellow Co-Director of Education and Theatre Aspen leadership, this position provides artistic and administrative leadership for all Theatre Aspen Education programs, including youth productions, summer camps, after-school classes, and community partnerships. The role combines program development, teaching, production leadership, staff supervision, and community engagement.
This is a full-time, year-round position based in Aspen, Colorado.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership
- Collaborate with the Co-Director of Education to oversee all Theatre Aspen Education programming, including summer camps, after-school classes, school partnerships, and community programs.
- Lead the planning, scheduling, staffing, and implementation of educational programming throughout the year.
- Design and implement curriculum that supports Theatre Aspen’s artistic and educational mission.
- Maintain accurate program records and analyze participation data to inform planning and reporting.
Artistic & Production Leadership
- Serve jointly as Artistic Directors for Theatre Aspen Education productions, including show selection, casting, and creative leadership.
- Oversee production calendars, budgets, and coordination with design and technical teams.
- Serve as director, choreographer, music director, or production leader for education productions as needed.
- Supervise front-of-house operations for education performances, including volunteer coordination and audience services.
Teaching & Instruction
- Share responsibility for teaching the department’s instructional load, including camps, classes, and partnership programs.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials that support students of varying ages and skill levels.
- Mentor teaching artists, apprentices, and student assistants.
Staff Supervision
- Collaboratively hire, train, and supervise teaching artists, creative teams, and seasonal education staff.
- Provide staff observations, feedback, and professional development support to ensure high instructional quality.
Community & Family Engagement
- Serve as a primary point of contact for families and program participants.
- Support positive student experiences by addressing questions, concerns, and behavioral matters when needed.
- Cultivate relationships with local schools, community partners, and arts organizations.
Marketing & Outreach
- Collaborate with Theatre Aspen’s marketing team to promote education programs and productions.
- Assist with outreach initiatives and the development of marketing materials.
- Support playbill advertising and audience engagement efforts for education productions.
Administration & Financial Management
- Assist in managing the education department’s operating budget, including tuition revenue, scholarships, and program expenses.
- Work with Theatre Aspen’s administrative team on contracting, financial reconciliation, and program logistics.
- Contribute to reporting for Theatre Aspen leadership, board committees, grants, and donor communications.
Summer Programming
During the summer season, the Co-Director of Education plays a leadership role in Theatre Aspen’s education camps and youth productions by:
- Serving as a Teaching Artist and program leader within summer camps.
- Acting as Production Manager or production leader for youth productions.
- Supporting daily program operations, including student supervision, staff coordination, and family communication.
Qualifications
- Minimum 4 years of professional theatre education or teaching experience following college.
- Degree in Theatre, Musical Theatre, Education, Dance, or a related field preferred.
- Experience directing, choreographing, music directing, or leading theatrical productions with young performers.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
- Passion for arts education and working with students from diverse backgrounds.
Compensation
Salary range: $65,000–$68,000, plus extensive benefits and housing subsidy.
