When Disney made a live-action version of their animated classic Beauty and the Beast in 2017, they got a fair amount of press for making the formerly gay-coded Lefou (sidekick to hunky Gaston) fully gay. And then the movie came out, and we found out that all they were talking about was a very brief glance between Lefou and another male character. Sigh.
Well, that has been fixed now by Tony-nominated The Book of Mormon star Rory O'Malley, who has produced and performed a new song with music by Max Mueller and lyrics by Cooper Collins. Titled "Perfect Little Life," the "I want" song finally gives the character the gay awakening we've all always wanted for him. See O'Malley sing the song, accompanied by the Budapest Scoring Orchestra, above.
The video features illustrations by Abigail Whitnail, and is produced by O'Malley and Pixel Playhouse's Vijay Nazareth. Direction is by Nazareth.
“My first torch song!” says O’Malley in a statement. “As a character actor—especially a gay one—I rarely get to sing the love song, unless you count when I had to ‘Turn It Off’ for Steve Blade. When I heard this beautiful, earnest piece by Max and Cooper for LeFou, I jumped at the chance to bring it to life with Vijay. I love how Pixel Playhouse is bringing musical theatre to a whole new generation, and I’m very proud of this collaboration."
“This is a dream come true,” adds Nazareth. “I’ve been making musicals on the internet since 2012, and it was always a dream to record with a real orchestra. My father, Daniel Nazareth, was a conductor, so it felt like a full-circle moment for me. I cried the day we recorded it. And then to have the incredible Rory O’Malley voice LeFou?! Ahh! I think I might be living my own, personal… ‘Perfect little life’ ;)”
