The screen version of Maggie O'Farrell's novel centers on the tragic inspiration behind one of Shakespeare's most enduring classics.

A new teaser trailer is giving us our first look at the upcoming screen version of Maggie O'Farrell's novel Hamnet, which centers on the tragic inspiration behind the creation of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Watch the trailer above.

The film sheds light on how the grief and love shared by William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and his wife, Agnes (Jessie Buckley), following the death of their young son from the plague ended up inspiring one of the Bard's most enduring tragic plays, Hamlet. O'Farrell's novel has also been adapted by Lolita Chakrabarti into a stage play, which has played Royal Shakespeare Company and London's West End. The film version, which is not connected to the stage play beyond sharing source material, features a screenplay co-written by O'Farrell and director Chloé Zhao. The cast also includes Joe Alwyn and Emily Watson.

Hamnet will be in select movie theatres beginning November 27, with a wide release to follow December 12.

The project is produced by Liza Marshall, Pippa Harris, Nicolas Gonda, Sam Mendes, and Steven Spielberg, with Kristie Macosko Krieger, Zhao, and Laurie Borg as executive producers.
