Video Watch: Get a Sneak Peek of the World Premiere Musical Version of Lauren Gunderson's I & You

Written by Gunderson and Ari Afsar, the new musical is headed for New Jersey's McCarter Theatre Center this fall.

The new musical version of Lauren Gunderson's I & You is set to make its world premiere at New Jersey's McCarter Theatre Center this fall, but a new video is offering a sneak peek of Gunderson and Ari Afsar's score. See Afsar sing "Caroline" from the work above.

The musical begins its New Jersey run, a co-production with Olney Theatre Center, September 13, with performances continuing through October 12. McCarter Artistic Director Sarah Rasmussen is at the helm, and casting is to be announced.

With a book by Gunderson (adapted from her own play) and music and lyrics by Afsar, the new musical follows 17-year-olds Caroline, who's stuck at home with an illness; and Anthony, an earnest overachiever obsessed with Walt Whitman. When the pair pulls an unexpected all-nighter, what starts as a reluctant assignment soon sets both their worlds spinning.

“This production represents the best of what McCarter stands for—fearless new work, storytelling that resonates deeply, and a celebration of women’s creative leadership propelling the future of American theatre,” says Rasmussen in a statement. “Opening our season with a world premiere led by this extraordinary group of women is both a privilege and a powerful artistic statement. I’m incredibly proud of this team and the new light we’re bringing to Lauren Gunderson’s poignant story.”

The production will feature movement by Steph Paul, music direction by Sujin Kim-Ramsey, scenic design by Beowulf Boritt, costume design by Kara Harmon, lighting design by Japhy Weideman, sound design by Elisabeth Weidner, and projections by Stefania Bulbarella. Julie Felise Dubiner will serve as dramaturg.

Tickets are available at McCarter.org.
