It’s up to them, New York! The 2023 Jimmy Awards nominees are here in the city, with an abundance of talent to be shared at Monday’s ceremony. Playbill stopped by rehearsal today for a sneak peek of the opening number, which the nominees will be performing on Monday. It is a medley packed full of songs from this season’s shows, including Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, New York, New York, and plenty of other Broadway favorites. If the electric energy and powerhouse vocals in the rehearsal room are any indication, this year’s class of nominees are a shining group of stars-to-be. Watch the video above.
The 14th annual Jimmy Awards will be held June 26 at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre. This year, there are 96 nominees, made up of two winners each from 48 high school musical theatre awards competitions across the U.S. At the end of the night, two students will be presented with awards for Best Performance by an Actress and Best Performance by an Actor. Several scholarships and additional honors will be awarded to the evening’s winners and finalists.
The Jimmy Awards, which is named after the late theatre owner James M. Nederlander and jokingly referred to as Broadway’s NFL draft, are notorious for helping young performers get discovered—stars like Reneé Rapp, Andrew Barth Feldman, Jai’Len Josey, and Kyle Selig were all Jimmy winners before making their Broadway debut.
Monday’s ceremony is presented by The Broadway League Foundation, and hosted by Corbin Bleu. Eva Noblezada (Hadestown) and McKenzie Kurtz (Wicked), both Jimmy alumni currently on Broadway, will also appear as presenters. Guest coaches include Jenni Barber, Max Chernin, Maryann Hu, Adam Kantor, Telly Leung, Howard McGillin, and Desi Oakley. The awards are available to stream on YouTube and Facebook, beginning at 7:30 PM EST.
