Calvin Remsberg directs and Rubinstein musical directs the production of the award-winning musical at Los Angeles' Matrix Theatre, where it began previews Sept. 14. "Days of Our Lives" star Matthew Ashford is also featured in the cast as Senator Fipp; the remainder of the company comprises Annie Abbott, Rona Benson, James Calvert, Amanda Carlin, Emily Janice Card, Steven Connor, James Cooper, Robert Briscoe Evans, Marc Fellner, Anthony Gruppuso, Steven Hack, John Hemphill, Liz Herron, Rob Kahn, Jean Kauffman, Norman Large, Larry Lederman, Jason Lewis, Kelly Lohman, Sarah Lowe, Sharon Madden, Tracy Powell, Sierra Rein, Melanie Rockwell, Mitch Stark and Vanessa Whitney.
Urinetown, which features music and lyrics by Mark Hollman and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, will run through Nov. 5. Show times are Thursday-Saturday evenings at 8 PM and Sundays at 3 PM.
The creative team for the production also includes Tracy Powell (choreography), Carol Doehring (lighting design), Matt Scarpino (set design), Vandy Scoates (costume design), sound design (Steven Hull) and Dan Belzer (conductor).
"A depletion of the earth's water supply has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets," reads Urinetown press notes. "The privilege to pee is regulated by a single, malevolent corporation, which profits by charging admission for one of mankind's most basic needs." The musical won 2002 Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book of a Musical and Best Direction of a Musical.
John Rubinstein made his Broadway debut in Pippin and received a Tony Award for his work in Children of a Lesser God. His other Main Stem credits include Fools, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, Hurlyburly, M. Butterfly, Love Letters, Getting Away with Murder and Ragtime.
