News U.K "X Factor" Finalist Amelia Lily to Star in New London Production of American Idiot in July Amelia Lily, a singer who finished third on the British "X Factor" TV competition in 2011, is to star as Whatshername in a new London production of American Idiot, the musical that features the songs of Green Day with lyrics by Billie Joe Armstrong and a book co-authored by Armstrong and Michael Mayer. It will begin performances at London's Arts Theatre July 17, prior to an official opening July 22, for a run that is booking through Sept. 27.

The musical is being directed and choreographed by Racky Plews, with sound by Chris Whybrow, design by Sara Perks and lighting by Tim Deiling. Further casting will be announced in due course.

The show tells the story of three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in a post 9/11 world. It originally premiered at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in September 2009, before transferring to Broadway's St James Theatre in April 2010. It has been seen in the U.K. with the American touring cast that also had a London run at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2012.

In a press statement, producers David Hutchinson and Philip Rowntree for Sell A Door Theatre Company and Stephen McGill Productions have commented, "We are absolutely delighted to be bringing American Idiot to the Arts Theatre this Summer and Autumn, following its very successful life on Broadway. It's a cracking musical for fans old and new, and we have had a fantastic relationship with the Arts Theatre for years. We can’t wait to bring this musical to the heart of London."

The Associate Producers are Hartshorn–Hook Productions, London Contemporary Theatre, and Nathan Gardner/Danny Brooke.

Amelia Lily's debut single "You Bring Me Joy" was released in 2012 and reached number two on the UK Singles Chart, while her follow-up singles "Shut Up (and Give Me Whatever You Got)" and "Party Over" (both 2013) reached the top 20 and the top 40 respectively. She has recently finished touring the UK as the Narrator in Joseph And His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
