An all-star world premiere of a new musical adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' beloved novel The Count of Monte Cristo is coming in 2026.
Directed by Peter Flynn, the new musical will play Off-Broadway's York Theatre in the spring, running March 12-April 5. Opening night is set for March 19.
Monte Cristo centers on a man wrongfully imprisoned who returns richer, wiser, and bent on vengeance. But as his carefully orchestrated plan unfolds, he must face the ultimate question: is justice enough without love?
With book and lyrics by two-time Tony-nominee Peter Kellogg (Anna Karenina, Desperate Measures) and music by two-time Richard Rogers Award winner Stephen Weiner, Monte Cristo will star Drama Desk Nominee Sierra Boggess (The Little Mermaid, The Phantom of the Opera, Harmony, School of Rock) as Mercedes, Adam Jacobs (Aladdin, Les Misérables, The Lion King, The Who’s Tommy) as Edmund, James Judy (Jekyll & Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Into the Woods, A Christmas Carol) as Danglars, Tony nominee Norm Lewis (The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Chicken & Biscuits, The Little Mermaid, Les Misérables) as Villefort, Stephanie Jae Park (War Paint, Hamilton, The King and I) as Haydee, Danny Rutigliano as Caderrousse/Abbe, Drama Desk winner Eliseo Roman (In The Heights, On Your Feet) as Morrell, Daniel Yearwood (Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends, Sweeney Todd, Ink) as Fernand, and Tony winner Karen Ziemba (Contact, Curtains, Never Gonna Dance, Steel Pier) as Carconte/Lucrezia Borgia.
More casting will be announced in the new year.
Developed in The York’s New2NY series, this production reunites the writer of Desperate Measures and the Penelope team.
Monte Cristo will feature music direction and orchestrations by David Hancock Turner, choreography by Marcos Santana, scenic design by Anne Mundell, costume design by Zoë Sienna Allen, sound design by Joanna Lynne Staub, and lighting design by Alan E. Edwards. Casting is by Andrea Zee of Zee-Casting.
