London News Shanghai Dolls Will Make World Premiere at London's Kiln Theatre in 2025

Katie Posner will direct Amy Ng’s new play.

Katie Posner, the joint artistic director of Paines Plough, will direct the world premiere of Amy Ng’s Shanghai Dolls at London's Kiln Theatre in 2025.

The production, which concludes Amit Sharma’s inaugural season as Kiln’s artistic director and CEO, will begin previews April 3, 2025, prior to an official opening April 10 for a limited engagement through May 10.

Ng’s new play looks at the untold story of two of the most influential women in Chinese history, Madame Mao and Sun Weishi.

Shanghai Dolls follows two penniless actresses, who meet in Shanghai at auditions for  A Dolls House and become inseparable. But as political upheaval rips through China, their tumultuous friendship will alter not only the course of their lives, but the course of history. One will become China’s first female director. The other, the architect of the Cultural Revolution.

Ng is a British-Hong Kong playwright, whose plays include Under the Umbrella, Acceptance, and Shangri-La as well as the radio plays Tiger Girls and Kilburn Passion and an adaptation of Miss Julie.
