Casting has been announced for the world premiere of Simon Reade's new adaptation of Christopher Isherwood's A Single Man. Presented by Troupe, in association with Park Theatre, previews will begin October 19 at Park200 at Park Theatre ahead of an October 21 opening night. Performances will continue through November 26.
The cast will be led by Theo Fraser Steele (Don Quixote, The Crown) as George, joined by Rachel Pickup (Bedroom Farce, Madam Secretary) as Charley, Freddie Gaminara (Light Falls, Red Joan) as Male Paramedic/Mr. Strunk/Alex/Nurse/Bartender, Phoebe Pryce (Cash Cow) as Female Paramedic/Mrs. Strunk/Maria/Doris, and Miles Molan in professional debut as Kenny/Jim.
Set in 1962 California, A Single Man follows Englishman George, a middle-aged gay college professor, through a single ordinary day. Living in the suburbs of Los Angeles, George has recently lost his long-term partner and struggles to move forward.
Philip Wilson will direct the production, which will feature set and costume design by Caitlin Abbott, lighting design by Peter Harrison, sound design and original composition by Beth Duke, and movement direction by Natasha Harrison.
Isherwoord's book, now adapted by Reade (Private Peaceful), was previously adapted for the screen in 2009. Tom Ford directed the film starring Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Nicholas Hoult, Matthew Goode, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Lee Pace. Isherwood is well-known for writing the semi-autobiographical novella Goodbye to Berlin, which was adapted for the stage and eventually became Cabaret.
