HERE Arts Center has found full casting for its upcoming world premiere run of Eisa Davis' The Essentialisn't. The Obie-winning playwright and Warriors co-writer will direct and star as previously announced, with performances running September 10-28.
Newly announced to be joining Davis in the cast are Jamella Cross (Bulrusher), Princess Jacob (The Christians), and Anire Kim Amoda (The Penguin).
The work, a performance art piece, explores the cultural techniques that make musical expression a kind of imprisonment—or a transcendent liberation.
The performance will also feature soundscape and sound design by Rucyl Mills, live sound mix and sound design by Christopher Payne, lighting design by Cha See, video design by Skye Mahaffie, scenic and costume consultation by Peter Born, and movement consultation by Okwui Okpokwasili. Alexus Jade Coney will serve as production stage manager, with Jack Daniel Woods as production manager and Anire Amoda as associate director.
Tickets are at HERE.org.
