Seattle Children's Theatre has joined the growing list of artists who wish to no longer be affiliated with the Kennedy Center following President Trump's takeover. On January 20, the theatre announced that it would be pulling its upcoming production of Young Dragon: A Bruce Lee Story from the Washington, D.C. institution's Family Theatre venue. The show, about martial arts legend Bruce Lee before he became famous, was supposed to run April 11-19.
Said Seattle Children's Theatre's managing director Kevin Malgesini in a statement: "As Young Dragon took shape, we were thrilled with the opportunity of celebrating a bicoastal world premiere. However, the landscape in which the production was originally created has changed to an extent that after careful consideration, we have come to the decision that this is not the right time to transfer a SCT production to the Kennedy Center. Our priority is to honor Bruce Lee's story with integrity and to uphold the trust our community places in us."
Young Dragon by Keiko Green will run February 19–March 15 in Seattle. SCT hopes to be able to extend the play, find additional venues for the show, and help the artists involved "mitigate [the] financial impact."
Shannon Lee, the daughter of Bruce Lee, expressed support for this decision, saying in a statement: "My father's story has always been about developing who you are while meeting the world with courage and compassion. Young Dragon: A Bruce Lee Story reflects and directly spreads this message to today's young people. While it's unfortunate that the production won't find a home in Washington, D.C. this spring, I fully support SCT's commitment to the spirit of my father's legacy of courageous action. I'm sincerely grateful to the artists, families, and community members who have poured their hearts into Young Dragon. We shall Walk On!"
The multi-venue institution has been in turmoil since President Trump took over, installing himself as chairman and replacing the board with hand-picked supporters. In the wake of the politicization of the formerly bipartisan venue, numerous events and artists have cancelled scheduled performances or partnerships, notably the national tour of Hamilton, the American College Theatre Festival, and the Washington National Opera. This has led to a decline in audience support and ticket sales.
The Kennedy Center board also recently voted to rename the historic venue the Trump-Kennedy Center. Though the change has been reflected in the building's facade, the official website URL remains Kennedy-Center.org; satirist Toby Morton currently owns the domain TrumpKennedyCenter.org and reportedly refuses to sell it to the Trump Administration. The legality of the Kennedy Center name change remains disputed, and will require Congressional approval to become official.
