Concord Theatricals has released a new Young Actors Edition of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Julian Fellowes, and Glenn Slater's School of Rock - The Musical. Adapted by iTheatrics, the revised version of the 2015 musical has been shortened to a one-hour running time and tailored to be performed by a complete cast that's under 18.
Adapted from Mike White's 2003 film, the musical follows a failed rock star moonlighting as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school who turns his class of straight-laced kids into a mind-blowing rock band. Premiering on Broadway in 2015, the work features a book by Fellowes, lyrics by Slater, and music by Lloyd Webber. The show also features songs from the original film.
"I am thrilled about the publication of the School of Rock: Young Actors Edition," says Lloyd Webber in a statement. "Ever since I wrote Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for a school in London, I have been passionate about young people discovering music through theatre. Find your inner rock, and let the music begin."
"School of Rock: Young Actors Edition gives students the chance to ‘rock hardcore!’” adds Timothy Allen McDonald, founder and CEO of iTheatrics. “Adapted by iTheatrics and featuring musical keys perfect for young voices (because few have the vocal range of the original ‘Dewey,’ Alex Brightman), with a running time of about 60 minutes, and no requirement for students to play live instruments, this edition makes the show accessible to schools and youth theatres everywhere.”
