Sabrina Carpenter has found a new position to try: Actor-producer.

The A-list pop star, who spent time on Broadway in Mean Girls before her run was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, is set to both produce and star in a new Alice in Wonderland movie musical for Universal Pictures. News of the project was broken by The Hollywood Reporter November 11.

While the project is currently untitled, we do have a handful of confirmed details. Based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, the film will be both written and directed by Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), with Marc Platt producing alongside Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment.

Carroll’s Victorian-era story centers on a young girl named Alice, who falls down a rabbit hole and into a fantastical land where so-called nonsense makes the most sense of all. The story is a passion of Carpenter's, with reports that Carpenter herself approached the studio more than a year ago with the specific idea of the film. Based on the first book in Carroll's series, this will not be an adaptation of the 1951 Disney animated movie or the live-action Tim Burton films.

Carpenter recently earned six Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for her record Man’s Best Friend; and Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Music Video for “Manchild.”

More information will be released in due course.
