Rick Elice Will Honor Roger Rees With Memoir Due This Fall | Playbill

Book News Rick Elice Will Honor Roger Rees With Memoir Due This Fall Finding Roger: An Improbably Theatrical Love Story will capture the 34 years they spent together onstage and off.

Tony Award-winning librettist Rick Elice, husband of late Tony-winning stage actor and director Roger Rees, has authored a memoir of their 34-year relationship to be published October 3 by Kingswell.

Finding Roger: An Improbably Theatrical Love Story is described as a heartbreaking memoir of the personal and artistic relationship Rees and Elice shared. It can be pre-ordered here.

A veteran of the stage and screen, Rees died of brain cancer July 10, 2015, at the age of 71—just weeks after taking his final Broadway bow in Kander and Ebb’s The Visit.

A year following Rees’ death, Elice told Playbill, “To Rog, perfection was a moving point, and he loved the pursuit of that point. He sprinted after it every day till the day he ran out of breath. His natural artistry, his natural humanity were utterly inspiring. As a result, he inspired whole legions of us—actors, writers, designers, directors, students, teachers—all of us raised up by Roger’s rare and great spirit. No one more than me. I have many thank you’s to make in my life, but my deepest will always be to this kind and gentle man, my beautiful husband, Roger Rees.”

According to the publisher, “Pulled straight from Rick’s enormous and broken heart, Finding Roger will touch everyone who reads it. It’s a story of profound loss—but also a love story for the ages.”

Rees and Elice collaborated on Peter and the Starcatcher, the Tony Award-nominated 2012 stage play that traced the origin story of Peter Pan. Elice penned the adaptation, which Rees co-directed. Both were Tony-nominated for their work.
