Go inside the energetic and re-imagined take on Shakespeare's famous tragedy Hamlet which plays The National Theatre's Dorfman Theatre in London with new production photos. Set to run through March 28, the work has been updated by Jude Christian (Dick Whittington) for audiences between the ages of eight and 12.
Jude Christian (Dick Wittington) updated the play, which follows one man's struggle to avenge his father and find his new place in the fictional royal family—all while grieving his father. Ellie Hurt directs this revival which stars Simeon Desvignes in the leading role, joined by Curtis Callier, Adam Clifford, Ashley Gerlach, Kathrine Payne, Claire Redcliffe, Annabelle Terry, and Monique Walker.
Between January 30 and March 6, the production toured English schools. This version of Hamlet was originally directed by Tinuke Craig (The Color Purple). Hurt pointed out in a statement, "Taking it into schools across the country means this show will not only be some of our audience's first experience of Shakespeare, but also of live theatre."
Speaking about last year’s touring production, a teacher said, “'It’s a brilliant way of introducing Shakespeare to young people, making the plays accessible and enjoyable and boosting the confidence of young people. This project breaths life in Shakespeare's plays and ignites a new passion for theatres.”
The production features set and costume design by Frankie Bradshaw, lighting designed by Paul Knott, sound designed by Clark Henry-Brown and Dom Coyote, and music composed and directed by Dom Coyote. Jeremy Barlow serves as fight director while Shane Dempsey serves as movement director.
