Apollo Theater will stage a presentation of Pulitzer Prize finalist Zora Howard's Hang Time, which has been traveling across the United States in a national tour presented by The Flea. Making its return to New York City where it made its debut at the Off-Broadway company in 2023, it will run at the historic Harlem venue November 7-15.
Written and directed by Howard, it centers on three Black men in America, chewing the fat under an old, wide tree. Setting the romantic and the macabre in sharp relief, the play peeks into their interiority–the great loves and bitter blues, inviting the viewer to envisage the living Black body triumphant over the legacy of violence that it holds.
The touring cast will return for the New York City bow, with Kamal Bolden as Slim, Julian Rozzell as Bird, and Bryce Foley as Blood.
Hang Time features scenic design by Neal Wilkinson, lighting design by Reza Behjat, costume design by Dominique Fawn Hill, associate costume design and wardrobe supervision by Carla Thomas, sound design by Megan Culley, and movement direction by Charlie Oates. Beatrice Perez-Arche serves as production stage manager alongside touring production manager Brian Freeland.
