Gamer theatre fans, get ready for your interests to unite! An upcoming Nintendo Switch game will put Princess Peach in the starring role for the first time. Of more note to Playbill readers, the game's premise will see Peach tasked with saving a stage play at the Sparkle Theatre from the wicked Grape and the Sour Bunch. Curtains! Glitter! What more is there to want?
Princess Peach: Showtime! is set to drop March 22, 2024.
According to press notes and a newly released trailer, Peach will take on a number of starring roles throughout the game, each with their own unique costumes and abilities. Peach will appear as a swordfighter, a detective, a kung fu master, a pastry chef, and more.
And while the upcoming release will be the first to star Princess Peach (as opposed to her plumber compatriot Mario), it will not be the first game in the Mario universe to look to the land of theatre. The title screen of Super Mario Bros. 3 featured a red curtain, followed by level designs made to look populated with flat scenery as opposed to three-dimensional nature elements. Each level ended when Mario reached the wings to the far right of the course. Though never explicitly stated, it gave many fans the notion that the entire game was itself a stage play. As it turned out, that wasn't just fanfic. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that theory in 2015.
