Happy August, theatre fans!
It may be too darn hot for a lot of things, but not for celebrating the birthdays of some of our favorite Broadway stars. So, raise a piragua and toast these steamy summer babes as they spread their wings and take to the sky. This non-exhaustive list does not count all the Broadway stars in the night sky this August. For a complete list of all August birthdays and anniversaries, check out the Playbill Vault.
On August 1, we'll be celebrating the "Pure Imagination" of seven-time Tony Award winning producer and director Sam Mendes (The Hills of California, The Lehman Trilogy, The Ferryman).
We'll be whistling a happy tune for Tony nominee Daniel Dae Kim (Yellow Face, The King and I) on his August 4 birthday.
Let's take Tony nominees Jesse Williams (Take Me Out) and Mark Strong (upcoming in Oedipus, A View from the Bridge), and Tony winner Janet McTeer (Bernhardt/Hamlet, God of Carnage, A Doll's House) out in celebration of their August 5 birthday.
These Broadway stars are "Satisfied" with their birthday celebration on August 6: Jelani Alladin (Frozen), Faith Prince (Disaster!, Annie), Dorian Harewood (The Notebook), and Leslie Odom, Jr. (Purlie Victorious, Hamilton).
August 7 brings four sparkling diamonds: Alex Timbers (Beetlejuice, Just in Time, All In: Comedy About Love), KO (Moulin Rouge! The Musical, West Side Story), Michael Shannon (Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune), and Jon Jon Briones (Hadestown, Miss Saigon).
It would be rude, it would be pretty f*ckin' rude not to celebrate Tony nominee Jennifer Simard (currently Death Becomes Her, Once Upon a One More Time, Company) and Drama Desk winner Michael Urie (Once Upon a Mattress, Spamalot) on August 8.
May good fortune attend David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly, Yellow Face) and Viola Davis (Fences, King Hedley II) on their August 11 birthday.
On August 14, we'll be thinking of one of Broadway's brightest: Sarah Brightman, who originated the role of Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera. Tony nominee Steve Martin (Meteor Shower, Bright Star) and four-time Tony winner David Stone (Purpose, Wicked, Next to Normal) are also "Popular" on this day.
August 16 is a special day for right hand men Okieriete Onaodowan (A Doll's House, Hamilton) and Stew (Passing Strange).
We've all been changed for good by our August 18 birthday, Winnie Holzman (Wicked).
Tony nominee Peter Gallagher (Left on Tenth, Noises Off) won't be left to celebrate alone on his August 19 birthday.
Alex Newell may be "independently owned and operated," but we want to make sure they're incandescently throned and celebrated like the QUEEN they are. The history-making Tony winner was born August 20. This is also a day on which the world will only spin forward for Tony winners Andrew Garfield (Angels in America, Death of a Salesman) and Gareth Owen (Hell's Kitchen, MJ).
Suddenly, Robin de Jesús (The Boys in the Band, La Cage aux Folles) is having a birthday. The three-time Tony nominee blows out his candles alongside fellow Tony nominee Kenita R. Miller (for colored girls..., Once on This Island) on August 21.
Fan-favorite chorine Amber Ardolino (Back to the Future, A Beautiful Noise) has swung onstage for the founding of America, the Ziegfeld follies, and a Parisian can-can. Now she's celebrating her birthday on August 22 alongside Tony winner James Corden (upcoming in Art, One Man, Two Guvnors).
Stop the Press and salute Tony nominees Andrew Rannells (All In: Comedy About Love, Gutenberg! The Musical!), Charles Busch (Taboo), and two-time Tony winning producer Ken Davenport (Operation Mincemeat, Oh, Mary!) on August 23.
On August 25, let's toast to Katie Rose Clarke (Merrily We Roll Along, Miss Saigon), Tony nominee Ato Blankson-Wood (Cabaret, Slave Play), and two-time Tony winning composer Leonard Bernstein (Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends, West Side Story).
We are All In on John Mulaney (Oh, Hello on Broadway) on his August 26 birthday.
Lea Michele (upcoming in Chess, Funny Girl, Spring Awakening) is the Queen of August 29 as she celebrates her birthday.
We'll be using The Big Knife to cut Tony nominee Marin Ireland's (upcoming in Queens, Reasons to Be Pretty) cake on August 30.
We'll close out the month on August 31 by dancing all night with two-time Tony winning lyricist Alan Jay Lerner (Camelot, My Fair Lady).
