Rehearsals have begun for the Broadway revival of Art by Yasmina Reza, starring Tony and Emmy-winning actors James Corden and Neil Patrick Harris, and Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale. Get a first look in the gallery below.
They will play three friends who argue over a painting. The revival will begin performances at the Music Box Theatre August 28 with an official opening September 16. The limited engagement will run until December 21.
Scott Ellis (currently of Pirates! The Penzance Musical) will direct.
This is the first Broadway revival of Reza's play, which was originally produced in French and then subsequently translated into English for Broadway by Christopher Hampton. The work is about three friends whose friendship is tested when one of them (Serge, to be played be Harris) buys an expensive painting that Marc (Cannavale) dislikes. The third friend, Yvan (Corden), is stuck in the middle. The original Broadway production had a similarly starry cast when it first ran on Broadway in 1998—that original production starred Alan Alda, Victor Garber, and Alfred Molina (who received a Tony nomination for his performance).
For the revival, Corden returns to Broadway for the first time in 13 years—he won a Tony for One Man, Two Guvnors in 2012, and has since won 12 Emmys for The Late Late Show with James Corden, Carpool Karaoke: The Series, and hosting the 70th Annual Tony Awards. Harris, last seen on the stage in Shit. Meet. Fan. at MCC Theater, won a Tony for Hedwig and the Angry Inch and five Emmys (for Glee and for hosting the Tonys four times). Cannavale won an Emmy for his work on Will & Grace, and was last seen on stage in Here We Are, the final musical written by the late Stephen Sondheim.
The design team will be announced at a later date. The revival is being produced by Michael Schulman's Sand & Snow Entertainment, ATG Productions, and Gavin Kalin Productions. 101 Productions, Ltd will serve as executive producer and general manager, and casting by is Jim Carnahan.
