Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome, and all that jazz to the second season of Schmigadoon, which sees Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key visit the mythical world of Schmicago, a loving but dark homage to Broadway musicals of the '70s. Get a first look at the upcoming six-episode season in a new trailer above. The first two episodes debut on Apple TV+ April 5, with single episodes debuting weekly.
Theatre fans will be able to spot homages to Pippin, Cabaret, Sweet Charity, Sweeney Todd, Chicago, A Chorus Line, Annie, Oliver!, and Hair in the trailer, but the full season promises to send up even more.
Returning from the show's first season are stars Strong and Key, alongside Oscar winner and 2022 Tony Awards host Ariana DeBose, Dove Cameron, Jaime Camil, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Ann Harada, Jane Krakowski, Martin Short, and Aaron Tveit. Newly joining for the second season are Tituss Burgess and Patrick Page.
Schmigadoon starred Strong and Key as a traveling couple who cross a bridge and find themselves trapped in a magical town that appears out of nowhere. Sound familiar? Created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, the series' first season parodied the Golden Age of musicals, including Brigadoon, Carousel, The Music Man, and more.
Produced by Broadway Video and Universal Television, Schmidagoon! is led by showrunner Paul, who also provides the series' original songs. Robert Luketic directs and co-executive produces with Micah Frank, with Lorne Michaels and Andrew Singer as executive producers. Strong and Caroline Maroney serve as producers. The entire first season can be streamed on Apple TV+.
The first season ended with a song pointing to the musicals of Stephen Sondheim, a nod to the forthcoming season that will parody the post-Rodgers and Hammerstein era.
