Tony Award-winning theatrical producer Robert Fox died March 20 from prostate cancer. He was 73 years old.

Born and raised in England, Mr. Fox was the son of theatrical agent Robin Fox and actress Angela Worthington. Like his father before him, he was an immensely influential impresario, with an eye for art and artists that would move the needle forward culturally.

Mr. Fox worked widely in both London's West End and on Broadway, forming Robert Fox Ltd in 1980. On Broadway, he was responsible for Corpse!, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, Lettice and Lovage, The Big Love, Skylight, The Judas Kiss, The Blue Room, Closer, Amy's View, The Ride Down Mt. Morgan, Vincent in Brixton, Salome, the 2003 revival of Gypsy starring Bernadette Peters, The Boy From Oz, The Pillowman, The Vertical Hour, Frost/Nixon, God of Carnage, Exit the King, A Behanding in Spokane, Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway, The Audience, Hangmen, and Good Night, and Good Luck

One of his most enduring professional associations was with the cult classic musical Chess by Tim Rice, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus; it is fitting that, after producing the musical's original Broadway run, he is now represented posthumously on Broadway through the hit revival, now running at the Imperial Theatre.

Off the Broadway boards, Mr. Fox produced David Bowie's Lazarus in New York and London, and he was involved in the producing team of the Florence Welch musical Gatsby: An American Myth at the time of his death. On screen, he produced Mike NicholsCloserThe Hours starring Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, and Julianne Moore; and Iris, starring Judi Dench, Kate Winslet, and Jim Broadbent. He was executive producer on Netflix's The Crown, helping to shape all six seasons of the monarchy drama.

Mr. Fox is survived by his elder brothers Edward and James; his wife, Fiona Golfar, and their two children; as well as his three children with his first wife, Celestia Sporborg. He was predeceased by his second wife, Tony winner Natasha Richardson. Services will be private, and a public memorial is not currently planned.
