The musical features a book by George Abbott and Betty Smith, music by Arthur Schwartz and lyrics by Dorothy Fields with a revised book by Elinor Renfield and further revisions by Susan DiLallo.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, according to press notes, is the poignant story of "the Nolan family, beginning in 1902 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. There's Johnny Nolan, a ne'er do well singer with dreams of Broadway glory, his wife, Katie, struggling to make a better life for her family, and 12-year-old Francie, an aspiring writer who relies on her imagination and her love of reading to get through hard times."
