Casting is set for Amas Musical Theatre's limited engagement of Dubbo Championship Wrestling, which will be presented November 13–15 at A.R.T./New York Theatres as part of its Dare to Be Different series.
Penned by Daniel Cullen and James Cullen, the musical follows an angry high schooler, who picks the wrong fight at school and is sent back to her rural hometown, where she faces a battle for her struggling family business, Dubbo Championship Wrestling.
Directed by Will Nunziata, with musical direction by Andy Peterson and choreography by Michael Callahan, the cast will feature Douglas Goodhart, Janine LaManna (The Drowsy Chaperone), Natalie Joy Johnson (Lempicka), Loren Lester (The Band’s Visit), Susie Mosher (Hairspray), Gabriella Palminteri, Justin Matthew Sargent (Hamilton national tour), and Cole Thompson (Into the Woods).
The assistant to the director is Amanda Berkson. The associate producer and additional book writer is Jonathan McKenna.
”I have always loved professional wrestling, and its pageantry and melodrama make it a natural fit for musical theatre,” said David Cullen in a statement. “In terms of looking like you’re about to burst into song, I consider pro wrestlers up there with Mormons, and the performers are just as bizarre as their in-ring personas. While the core theme is ‘home is where the heart is,’ the show explores ideas of identity, reality, and wrestling’s checkered history with race.”
Dubbo Championship Wrestling was the recipient of the 2024 Eric H. Weinberger Award for Emerging Librettists. A reading of the new musical was held in March.
Tickets are $20 and may be obtained here.
