Music Theatre International has released She Persisted The Musical JR. for licensing!
Adapted from Chelsea Clinton and Alexandra Boiger's She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World, the musical features a book and lyrics by Adam Tobin and music by Deborah Wicks La Puma. It follows a fourth grader on a field trip to the National Museum of Women in History that becomes a time-travel adventure to visit the incredible women who changed American history, including Harriet Tubman, Ruby Bridges, Sally Ride, Sonia Sotomayor, and more.
The musical has been previously been performed by adults for family audiences, including an Off-Broadway run via Atlantic Theater Company's Atlantic for Kids series in 2020. This new version, part of MTI's Broadway Junior collection, presents a 60-minute version of the show designed expressly for performers under the age of 18.
"I am so proud to have She Persisted JR. now available for young performers to step into the stories of these historic and amazing American Women!" said La Puma in a statement. "Their persistence in the face of adversity is a universal message that can bring strength, joy, and hope to boys and girls across the country."
“The characters in She Persisted JR.—famous women and everyday kids—demonstrate the many tools we can use for managing challenges, from finding alternate solutions to embracing our own strengths. We are thrilled that kids across the country can experience these ideas and have a ton of fun in the process,” adds Tobin.
Excerpts from this Junior adaptation of She Persisted, created under the supervision of Timothy Allen McDonald of iTheatrics, debuted at the 2025 Junior Theater Festivals in Atlanta and Sacramento.
“She Persisted JR. is a celebration of courage, resilience, and the unstoppable spirit of women who change the world,” says MTI President and CEO Drew Cohen. “We can’t wait to see how the show inspires young performers and audience members of all ages everywhere.”
