Classic Arts News Metropolitan Opera Announces 2023 Summer HD Festival

The series of summer screenings will commence August 25 with the 1987 film Moonstruck.

The Metropolitan Opera's Summer HD Festival, an annual series of free screenings in Lincoln Center Plaza, will return this year, beginning Friday, August 25 with a screening of the 1987 romantic comedy film Moonstruck, directed by Norman Jewison, and starring Cher. Per the New York Times, the Met is in talks with composer Ricky Ian Gordon to create an opera based on the movie, with the film's original screenwriter John Patrick Shanley returning as librettist.

The Summer HD festival will offer more than 2,500 seats nightly, with no tickets required. The festival continue with ten operas from the Met's Live in HD catalog, including this season's hit production of The Hours, which will return to the Met next season. The full schedule is as follows:
