The Menier Chocolate Factory revival of Mel Brooks’ Tony-winning musical The Producers has announced a West End transfer. Performances will begin August 30 at the Garrick Theatre, ahead of an official opening September 15
The production played its final performance at the Menier Chocolate Factory March 1.
Much of the Menier will reprise their performances in the West End, including Andy Nyman (Fiddler on the Roof) as Max Bialystock, Marc Antolin (I Wish You Well) as Leo Bloom, Trevor Ashley (Diamonds Are for Trevor) as Roger de Bris, Raj Ghatak (The Father and the Assassin, Life of Pi) as Carmen Ghia, Harry Morrison (Come from Away, The Third Man) as Franz Liebkind, and Joanna Woodward (The Time Traveller’s Wife, Merrily We Roll Along) as Ulla.
Additional casting and a creative team will be announced at a later date.
“I am enormously proud of the entire team working across The Producers,” Menier Chocolate Factory Artistic Director David Babani said in a statement. “The journey thus far at the Menier has been an utter joy from start to finish, with an incomparable cast led by the very brilliant Andy Nyman and Marc Antolin. To have the opportunity to do it all again, and grow the production as we transfer to the West End with our brilliant partners Nica Burns, Max Weitzenhoffer, and Kevin Salter, is an absolute privilege.”
The Producers, which won a record-breaking 12 2001 Tony Awards, features music and lyrics by Brooks and a book by Brooks and Thomas Meehan. Based on Brooks' 1967 film, the musical follows two theatrical producers who scheme to get rich by overselling interests in a Broadway flop. Complications ensue when the show unexpectedly turns out to be successful. Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, and Cady Huffman opened the original Broadway production.
David Babani and Nica Burns, Max Weitzenhoffer, Kevin Salter, Seaview, Creative Partners Productions, and 2ontheaisleBDWY are producing.
