Luhrmann directed the current feature film "Australia," starring Tony winner Hugh Jackman and Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman. F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" concerns the tragic passions of wealthy New Yorkers in the 1920s. The property has been seen as a 1926 Broadway play by Owen Davis, an opera by John Harbison and a 1974 movie that starred Robert Redford as Gatsby.
No studio, screenwriter or timetable has been announced for the new film version.
Luhrmann's La Bohème in 2002-03 had the look of his richly romantic film "Moulin Rouge." Its two 2003 Tony Award wins were for Scenic Design (Catherine Martin) and Lighting Design (Nigel Levings).
The production was also nominated for Direction (Luhrmann), Revival of a Musical, Costume Design (Martin) and Orchestrations (Nicholas Kitsopoulos).
