New York Theatre Workshop is giving a two-week extension to Lights Out: Nat "King" Cole. The production, coming to the Off-Broadway company following runs at People's Light in Malvern, Pennsylvania, and Los Angeles' Geffen Playhouse, begins previews April 30 ahead of a May 20 opening. Performances will now continue through June 29.
Dulé Hill (The West Wing) is starring as the titular jazz artist, with Daniel J. Watts (Hamilton) as Sammy Davis, Jr., Krystal Joy Brown (Merrily We Roll Along), Kathy Fitzgerald (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), Christopher Ryan Grant (The Ballad of Johnny and June), Ruby Lewis (Paramour), Elliott Mattox (Tammy Faye), Kenita Miller (for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf), Mekhi Richardson, and Walter Russell III (MJ The Musical). Casting is by Claire Yensen.
The play, written by Colman Domingo and Patricia McGregor, takes place on the final night of Nat King Cole's variety show and features the crooner's signature songs including “Nature Boy,” “It’s a Good Day,” and “Smile." The music is supervised, orchestrated, and arranged by John McDaniel.
The production also features choreography by Edgar Godineaux, tap choreography by Jared Grimes, music direction by Vadim Feichtner, scenic design by Clint Ramos, costume design by Katie O'Neill, lighting design by Stacey Derosier, sound design by Alex Hawthorn and Drew Levy, video design by David Bengali, and wig design by Nikiya Mathis. Norman Anthony Small serves as stage manager.
The play's Off-Broadway bow may hint at bigger aspirations for the show. Domingo has already announced that he is also developing Cole’s story into a separate film, with the stage and screen favorite to star himself.
