Grosses Liberation Closes to Highest Box Office of Run, and More From Last Week's Broadway Grosses

The Bess Wohl play finished up its limited run at the James Earl Jones Theatre February 1.

Final performances at Broadway's Mamma Mia! and Liberation gave grosses a nice bump for both last week, with Liberation's take of $734,237 coming in as the top gross of the Bess Wohl play's entire run. Mamma Mia! failed to match the highs it reached the week of New Year's, but its final earnings of $1.82 million saw the revival ending a wildly high-grossing run on a high note regardless.

The week was, overall, solid for the Main Stem, with Broadway Week's two-for-one ticket program helping keep things up even in one of Broadway's sleepiest periods. In fact, thanks to no snowstorm cancellations last week, grosses actually went up by a little more than 6%, and with more than 91% of seats filled. In total, 269,655 tickets were sold on Broadway last week, and at an average price of $117.81. Thanks, Broadway Week (which continues through February 12, by the way)!

Beyond those wins, Broadway continued to be mostly business as usual. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child continued its chart-topping run thanks to Harry Potter film star Tom Felton (alias Draco Malfoy) joining the cast, reigning supreme as Broadway's top grosser last week with $2.36 million. The rest of the top five were filled out by fellow usual suspects HamiltonMamma Mia!Wicked, and The Lion King.

The loss of Mamma Mia!, in particular, will be a major blow to Broadway's cumulative take, which we can expect to take a dip this week. But have no fear—between Broadway Week and the rapidly approaching new crop of shows opening up in the spring, there's lots to take the place of even rabidly beloved ABBA musicals in our hearts. This season so far is still beating the same period of time from last year's historic season by 8%.
