Lucille Lortel Award-winning musical KPOP appears to be Broadway-bound at last following the cancellation of a pre-Broadway engagement and plans for a 2021 Broadway bow that did not materialize. A press invitation sent out March 22 teases "KPOP is Coming to Broadway: The Announcement," an event planned for March 30 at New York's Korean Cultural Center. Stay tuned for additional details following the press-only event.
KPOP, which takes audiences behind the scenes of the K-pop industry, was conceived by Woodshed Collective and Jason Kim and features a book by Kim; music, lyrics, and music production by Helen Park; and music and lyrics by Max Vernon.
The musical played an acclaimed Off-Broadway run through Ars Nova, Ma-Yi Theater, and the Woodshed Collective in 2017, featuring an immersive design by Woodshed Collective, choreography by Jennifer Weber (The Hip Hop Nutcracker), and direction by Teddy Bergman (Empire Travel Agency).
The work was awarded the 2018 Richard Rodgers Award and is the recipient of three Lucille Lortel Awards (including Outstanding Musical) and an Off Broadway Alliance Award for Best Unique Theatrical Experience.
