Justin David Sullivan, who plays May in the hit jukebox musical & Juliet, is temporarily out of the musical following an injury sustained during the August 3 evening performance at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.

A spokesperson for the production said in a statement, "Justin was injured on stage during the show on Saturday night, due to an accidental operator error. They’ve been evaluated by doctors and are at home recovering. We expect them to return soon.”

Last week, it was announced that Sullivan, Ben Jackson Walker, and Philippe Arroyo would play their final performances October 27 with Tony nominee Betsy Wolfe offering her last show October 20. Drew Gehling will join the company in the role of Shakespeare beginning August 16 with additional casting to be announced.

The current cast of & Juliet includes Maya Boyd as Juliet, Tony winner Paulo Szot as Lance, Tony nominee Wolfe as Anne Hathaway, Scott as Shakespeare, Tony nominee Jeannette Bayardelle as Angelique, Sullivan as May, Walker as Romeo, and Arroyo as Francois, with Daniel Assetta, Andrew Chappelle, Michael Iván Carrier, Phil Colgan, Virgil Gadson, Najah Hetsberger, Makai Hernandez, Bobby “Pocket” Horner, Joomin Hwang, Khailah Johnson, Megan Kane, Alaina Vi Maderal, Daniel J. Maldonado, Brittany Nicholas, Ava Noble, Jasmine Rafael, Matt Raffy, and Tiernan Tunnicliffe.

The jukebox musical, nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, flips the script on the William Shakespeare classic, imagining what would happen next if Juliet hadn’t ended it all over Romeo. Featuring a book by David West Read, the score includes a mix of tunes by Max Martin and more, including “Since U Been Gone,” “Roar,” “I Want It That Way,” and “Confident.”

The production also has direction by Luke Sheppard, choreography by Jennifer Weber, musical supervision, orchestrations, and arrangements by Bill Sherman, scenic design by Soutra Gilmour, costume design by Paloma Young, lighting design by Howard Hudson, sound design by Gareth Owen, video projection design by Andrzej Goulding, hair, wig, and makeup design by J. Jared Janas, and musical direction and additional orchestrations by Dominic Fallacaro.

U.S. casting is by Stephen Kopel and Carrie Gardner.

The international hit musical, which opened at the Sondheim November 17, 2022, was the first new musical of the 2022–2023 Broadway season to announce its recoupment. The Main Stem production has grossed more than $93,000,000 and welcomed more than 650,000 audience members to date.
