School of Rock and Bad Cinderella choreographer JoAnn M. Hunter is set to direct and choreograph the Broadway-aimed musical Yasuke: The Black Samurai, Variety reports

The musical, which is aiming to open on Broadway during the 2026-2027 season, features a book and music by Bálint Varga, with lyrics by Azusa Fujikura, Jöel René Scoville, and Joe Barros.

Yasuke: The Black Samurai tells the story of Yasuke, an African man who travels to 16th century Feudal Japan after being uprooted from Mozambique. Additional creatives and casting are to be announced. 

Alexander Robertson of Emlex Entertainment will produce.
