The CD features 17 songs from the film, including three original numbers — "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far." The new songs were also penned by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who received the Tony Award for their Hairspray score.
The album also features the song "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" as sung by all three incarnations of Tracy Turnblad — original film star Rikki Lake, original Broadway star Marissa Jaret Winokur and film star Nikki Blonsky.
The "Hairspray" soundtrack is produced by Shaiman and features tracks mixed by Ed Cherney and Peter Mokran.

The film is based on the still-running musical Hairspray, which itself was based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name. The movie musical was adapted by Leslie Dixon from the Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan book and features the score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman with additional songs created for the film. The film hits theatres nationwide July 20.
