Stereophonic made history by earning 13 Tony Award nominations—the most of any play, ever—and won Best Play.

Stereophonic, the 2024 Tony-winning Best Play, has headed out on tour, and Playbill has an up close and personal look.

Written by David Adjmi, Stereophonic follows an unnamed '70s rock band recording their sophomore album. It features original music by Will Butler, formerly of the band Arcade Fire. Stereophonic made history by earning 13 Tony Award nominations: the most of any play, ever. It went on to win five Tonys, including Best Play, Best Director (Daniel Aukin), Best Featured Actor (Will Brill), Best Scenic Design (David Zinn) and Best Sound Design (Ryan Rumery).

The tour stars Jack Barrett as Grover, Claire DeJean as Diana, Steven Lee Johnson as Charlie, Emilie Kouatchou as Holly, Cornelius McMoyler as Simon, Denver Milord as Peter, and Christopher Mowod as Reg. The tour understudies include Eli Bridges, Andrew Gombas, Quinn Allyn Martin, Jake Regensburg and Lauren Wilmore.

The record-breaking Broadway production ended its run at the Golden Theatre January 12, 2025, after 305 performances. The play is now running in London’s at the Duke of York’s Theatre. 

The creative team includes scenic designer David Zinn, costume designer Enver Chakartash, lighting designer Jiyoun Chang, orchestrators Butler and Justin Craig, sound designer Ryan Rumery, music director Craig, and hair and wig designers Robert Pickens and Katie Gell. Gigi Buffington serves as the voice, text, and dialect coach. Casting is by Alldaffer & Donadio Casting.

The U.S. National Tour of Stereophonic is produced by Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Seaview, Sonia Friedman Productions, Linden Productions, Ashley Melone & Nick Mills. The New York premiere was produced in 2023 by Playwrights Horizons.
